28 Oct 09 Sugar Union Leaders Sentenced to Prison in Iran - Act Now! -- In a drive to destroy the independent union established last year by workers at the giant Haft Tapeh plantation/refining sugar complex in southern Iran, a court on October 12 sentenced 6 union leaders to immediate prison terms on charges stemming from October 2007. Three leaders convicted for their union activity last year for "endangering national security" in connection with worker action in 2008 had their sentences overturned on appeal in September. Two union officers, president Ali Nejati and communications officer Reza Rakhshan, both of whom face lengthy prison sentences, were still awaiting the outcome of their appeal when the court in the city of Dezful sentenced the six leaders on the similar 2007 charges. 26 Oct 09 Migrant Worker Activist Minod "Minu" Moktan Deported!! -- The South Korean government deported Minu (Minod Moktan) to Nepal at 5pm, Friday, October 23. Minu lived in South Korea for 18 years while working in factories, singing songs and working as a media activist at Migrant Worker's Television. 19 Oct 09 Railway Unions, Workers Picket PKP -- On Oct. 13, a few hundred unionists and workers picketed the headquarters of PKP Railways in Warsaw. PKP railways, the former Polish State Railways, was divided into many smaller units in 2001 as part of restructuring inspired by both the IMF and European Union. Restructuring, increased outsourcing and financial manipulation has lead to severe job loss in some of the units of the PKP Group, most notably in PKP Cargo. The protest was directed towards one of the entities in the PKP group, PKP-PLK which is responsible for rail-line management including the maintance of the lines, conducting trains, setting timetables and managing the railyards.
