NYERI teachers yesterday joined the national strike. More than 300 teachers held peaceful demonstrations after meeting at the Knut offices.

Speaking to the teachers Knut executive secretary Mutahi Kahiga said the government is humiliating them and has lost its credibility.

"We shall remain on strike until we are paid Sh25 billion in allowances. We shall not accept the standard payment but a full implementation of the salary deal," he said.

Mutahi said the Teachers Service Commission and the Education ministry are teachers' enemies.

"Teachers have been living miserable lives yet they are expected to be role models for their students. The education Secreatary Kaimenyi should go back to lecture in universities and leave that docket," he said.

Kahiga who was accompanied Knut chairman Patrick Karinga said they thought things would change with the Jubilee government but they are surprised that it is "business as usual".

The secretary dismissed the government's laptop project saying they will paralyse it until their demands are addressed. He said it is ridiculous to offer laptops while there is a shortage of teachers.
