Stop-work meetings will be held in Melbourne on Tuesday after five months of negotiations with Metro Trains.

Trevor Dobbyn, from the Rail, Bus and Tram Union, says commuters will not be affected.

"There'll be overtime bans, but they won't affect the running of suburban trains," he said.

"We've exempted safety-critical trains to make sure the system runs as normal.

"These bans are aimed at Metro, not the travelling public."

Meanwhile, train services on the Gippsland line have been suspended because of track damage.

Heavy weekend rain washed away the foundations of the V/Line track between Morwell and Traralgon.

Major disruptions and delays are likely this morning.

Trains are being replaced by buses for parts of the journey but customers are advised to find alternative travel.
