The teachers - members of the Post Primary Teachers Association - are fighting for smaller class sizes and a pay rise. As in so many other countries the New Zealand government is trying to make the education service pay for the crisis caused by the neo-liberal economic policies which that country has been a trail blazer for.

Meanwhile 93% of primary teachers have voted to reject a small pay offer from the government after months of negotiations and are threatening strike action in the new year if the government does not improve its offer. (see previous posts on teachers’ campaigns for education in New Zealand)
