40 RMG workers hurt in Ashulia clash

At least 40 workers were injured Sunday morning in a clash with law enforcers in Savar, police said, after around 8,000 employees of several ready-made garment factories demonstrated demanding pay hike.

Police lobbed tear shells to disperse the protesters who vandalised some of the factories belong to the Envoy Group owned by Abdus Salam Murshedy, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

The workers began demonstrating at about 10:00am after they found the factories locked which the authorities closed Saturday afternoon following a similar programme.

The workers started demonstration on Saturday demanding Tk 5,000 as minimum pay scale.

The clash ensued when a team of Ashulia Police Station rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the workers.

Police took the situation under control after one and a half hours.
