Lecturers at the University of Montreal plan to stage a half-day strike on Monday, but the institution will remain open to students and most activities will go ahead as scheduled.

strike will last from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

One of the key issues is the number of professors being hired.

The union representing the lecturers would like to see the creation of 200 new teaching jobs over the next six years, and a reduced workload for professors who mentor students pursuing postgraduate degrees.

The union is also calling for better job security and salary increases comparable to levels at other major Canadian research universities.

Certain classes could be cancelled due to Monday's strike, according to a statement issued by the university.
