The BWI affiliate in the neighbouring Dominican Republic, AMACOA (Asociación de Maestros Constructores de Obras Autorizados) has called its members to support the Haitians with food and water.

A group of 6 unions in Sweden have decided to donate funds through the Swedish UN Association to aid the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Included in the group are 4 affiliates of the BWI in Sweden; Byggnads, Elektrikerna, Målarna and SEKO.

“I encourage all BWI affiliates to follow the example of our Dominican and Swedish affiliates donating to the victims in Haiti and to provide humanitarian and reconstruction assistance," says Ambet Yuson BWI General Secretary.

Massive damage has been caused to Haiti's underdeveloped, poorly maintained infrastructure and property, with most buildings turned into rubble. The global trade union movement is doing its utmost to aid Haitian sisters and brothers in their moment of extraordinary need.

The capital of Port-au-Prince, a city of 3 million people, lies in ruins. Several thousand people are believed to have been killed or injured after the devastating earthquake that hit the small Caribbean nation by a magnitude 7 earthquake on 12 January 2010.
