Agility and flexibility are two of the most sought-after qualities among employees by organisations in these tough economic times, according to Jeffrey A Joerres, chairman and CEO of Manpower

Joerres, whose US$22-billion (Bt748 billion) global staffing company found 4.1 million jobs for workers worldwide last year, said companies are looking for people who can maintain the right mindset despite the difficult economic times, demonstrating flexibility, agility and the ability to take responsibility for their own training and development.

"Market yourself as somebody who has agility and flexibility. You have to wear two hats: I'm hiring you for a [certain] position now, but you might have to do some 'double-hatting'," he said.

Employees must take a level of responsibility for their own development and training and be able to show their employers that they can improve their skills and capabilities, Joerres said.

"It's your own responsibility. A company offers you opportunities; seek those opportunities. At night you can watch television, or you can improve your skills. In a changing world, if you cannot prove that you have improved your skills and capabilities, you're falling behind," he said.

"And volunteer to do extra things in the company; make a big difference."

Joerres advised job-seekers to maintain their composure; be persistent, but don't be annoyed.

"No one wants to hire somebody who is on their last legs and begging for a job," he said.
