Subway employees said they would go on strike tomorrow, as they are demanding that the government grant legal recognition to the sector's union. They are also requesting a pay increase from subway manager Metrovías, said Ariel Rochetti, a spokesman of the workers.

In January, subway workers voted in favour of the creation of a new union, to splinter from the UTA transport workers' union. Nevertheless, the government has not yet granted a legal status to the new organization, as the Argentine Labour Law rules there can be only one union per branch.

Last year, a ruling of the Supreme Court opened the door for multiple-union representation, and now the CTA (an umbrella union opposed to the Peronist official CGT Labour Confederation) and subway workers, are asking the government to grant the legal recognition. The union is asking Metrovías to recognize the delegates elected last April as "legitimate," said Rochetti.
