Jaroen Markmool paid Bt300,000 for treatment at a private hospital, after her transfer from the first unnamed one, and another Bt140,000 at Chulalongkorn Hospital, both of which treated her well.

Her relative, Somsak saeLim, said a civil lawsuit had been lodged against the first hospital to help share the amount together with the SSO.

"She wouldn't have to pay a single baht had the first hospital treated her in accordance with basic medical practice, because that hospital is under SSO contract," Somsak added.

The woman would need another Bt200,000 for more surgery to replace both her knee caps which she claims were damaged as a result of poor treatment at the first hospital.

Somsak said she had been treated in a room without sanitation, which was in violation of medical practice, and coaltainted debris was not removed from her legs until she was taken to the two other hospitals.
