The recent political crackdown in Thailand has resulted in violations of international human rights as the Thai government continues to arrest pro-democratic and human rights activists without due judicial process. This is exemplified by the arrest and detainment of Somyot Pruksakasemsuk since 24 May 2010.

BWI has expressed its concern regarding Pruksakasemsukâ™s arrest by sending a protest letter to the Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva. This action is part of an international solidarity campaign that is supported by trade unions throughout the world.

According to Apolinar Tolentino, Officer in Charge of BWI Asia Pacific Region, âœThe BWI is deeply alarmed by recent detention of Somyot Pruksakasemsuk. This further precipitates a worsening political situation in Thailand. We strongly urge the Thai Government to immediately release Somyot Pruksakasemsukâ.

Somyot Pruksakasemsuk was arrested along with Dr. Suthachai Yimprasert, Associate Professor of Chulalongkom University after both men had voluntarily surrendered to the Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) upon hearing of their arrest warrants. The warrants were in relation to the May 21, 2010 Press Conference coordinated by Mr. Pruksakasemsuk and Dr. Yimprasert in front the House No. 111 Foundation in the name of the 24th of June Democracy Group. It should be noted that the Press Conference was completely peaceful and impartial in nature.

Since both of the menâ™s arrest, Dr. Yimpraswert has been released; however, Pruksakasemsuk continues to be detained without proper allegation or inquiry sessions. In regard to this, Apolinar Tolentino emphasized that BWI along with other international organizations will continue to monitor the situation until he is freed.
