The labour union of Thai Airways International on Wednesday submitted a letter to the senate committee on corruption and good governance asking for a fact-finding investigation into the excess-baggage scandal surrounding THAI executive chairman Wallop Bhukkanasut.

The union, led by union president Jaemsri Sukchotirat, also called for Mr Wallop to resign to show responsibility, saying that the scandal had severely tarnished the reputation of the Thai flag carrier.

The letter was received by Senator Rossana Tositrakul, chair the senate committee.

Mr Wallop and his wife were accused of evading excess baggage charges on up to 40 suitcases weighing about 500 kilogrammes, an amount that would have normally incurred charges totalling hundreds of thousands of baht, on their return from a recent trip to Japan.

They were also alleged to have bypassed customs control by having their baggage delivered to the lost-and-found channel at Suvarnabhumi airport.
